3.2.2 Software Requirements

 

AdventNet Web NMS can run on different platforms such as Windows, Solaris, IBM AIX and Linux. Below is a list of software versions supported by Web NMS. Though Web NMS supports different software versions, only a particular software version is bundled with the product. If you wish to use any other supported version, you need to download that version from the respective web site and follow the upgrade procedure provided in the Developer Guide.

For instance, Web NMS supports Tomcat 4.0.40, 4.1.27 and 5.0.27. But, only Tomcat 4.1.27 is bundled with Web NMS. If you  wish to use Tomcat 5.0.27, you need to download Tomcat 5.0.27 from the official website of Tomcat. Then you can upgrade to that version by following the steps detailed in the documentation provided for that purpose in Developer Guide.

For the complete list of software versions bundled with Web NMS, refer to the section Packages Bundled.  Certain third party software such as database drivers are to be downloaded by the users from the respective sites.

 

Supported Platforms

Note: There are some limitations in running Web NMS on Fedora Core 4. Please read this document to overcome them.

 

The databases supported are MySQL, Oracle 8i, 9i and 10g, Solid, Sybase, MSSQL,TimesTen, and Firebird. For information on drivers, refer to Database Drivers. The default bundled database is MySQL 3.23.58.

Note: From 4.7 Service Pack 2 onwards, Web NMS provides only limited support for JDK 1.3. Please contact nms-support@adventnet.com for further details on using JDK 1.3.

 

For Development

 

For development of Applets and applications, which in turn can be integrated with Web NMS, you will require the Java Development Kit (JDK) and/or other tools. The AdventNet Web NMS Studio Client Builder can be used for building applications (Panels, Frames, Applets).

 

 

Note: When using the IDEs in Web NMS with JDK 1.5, the xalan.jar entry in the CLASSPATH setting in <Web NMS Home>\<TOOLS HOME>\setEnv.bat/sh file must be removed.  As the implementation in JDK1.5 with respect to the packages in xalan.jar has been modified, this change is required to create and run the applications without any issues.

 

Issue with Windows XP/Windows 2000 + JDK1.5

 

When using JDK 1.5 version along with Studio tools in Windows XP systems, the following exceptions are displayed in the console when upgrading or packaging Studio projects.

 

java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\WebNMS\Testing\AdventNet\WebNMS\StudioTools\Studio\projects\<Tutorial_Name>\config\Packager.

       at java.io.FileOutputStream.open(Native Method)

To overcome this issue, xalan.jar, crimson.jar  and jaxp.jar classes of previous Java versions should be used. To achieve this, the Endorsed Standards Override Mechanism can be followed.

 

To implement this,

1. Copy xalan.jar, crimson.jar, and jaxp.jar to a folder, for example "endorsed_nms" under <Web NMS Home>/classes folder.

2. In the <WebNMS Home>\StudioTools\Studio\setEnv.bat/sh file, add the below content.

 

-Djava.endorsed.dirs=%WEBNMSHOME%\classes\endorsed_nms

 

For example, after adding the above content, the JAVA_CMD entry would be:

set JAVA_CMD="%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java" -Xmx200M -Djava.endorsed.dirs=%WEBNMSHOME%\classes\endorsed_nms

 

The above procedure must be used to overcome the same issue in other IDEs such as Configuration Wizard, Chassis Wizard also.
